Indian Lesbian Film Attacked by Fundamentalists, Gays
An Indian film about a lesbian love affair that touched off violent protests — and, in one instance, a theater burning — by the fundamentalist Shiv Sena party after it was released this month, has now encountered opposition from gay activists. The Organized Lesbian Alliance for Visibility and Action charged on Wednesday that the film, Girlfriend, directed by Karan Razdan, is doing nothing to enhance the image of lesbians in India. A spokeswoman for the group called the movie, “a cheap and titillation-oriented film masquerading as one that’s liberal.”

Let’s forget the uninspired headline  – what’s more important is that some Indian fundamentalists really go berserk over that movie. It’s called “Girlfriend” btw, and if this site is anything to go by, it looks incredibly cheesy, so why bother? It’s just another one of those “evil-lesbian-steals-g/f” stories the world doesn’t need: judging by the trailers I’ve seen so far, it looks like a heterosexual man’s fantasy come to life – lip stick lesbians with inch-long fingernails smacking each other. Plus I’m kind of irritated by the singing and dancing  – but that’s apparently Bollywood standard and not only specific for this movie. Such a fuss about such a mess? Not worth it…
