Movie of the week: “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” SPOILERS!

Star Wars: Episode III

Since I can hardly remember what happened in the last installment of the Star Wars series, I’m probably not the right person to point out glaring continuity mistakes, but hey, if even I spot them, then die-hard fans will do, too.

Let’s start with the positive things: the movie looks spectacular. There isn’t a single scene in it that looks too much like a CGI – everything, from the space ships to the cities, planets and animated characters like Yoda, is fantastically looking. I would hang a picture of the fiery hell on Mustafa on my wall any time, it’s just perfect.

Not so positive were mostly the acting, apart from Ian McDiarmid and Yoda (which, given this is an animated figure, says something not very nice about the human actors). I’m especially disappointed with the performance of Natalie Portman, who, usually being a rather talented actress, spends most of her time sporting unbecoming costumes, an artifical bump and saying the most stupid lines: “Oh, Anakin!”. She also has the ungraceful task of choking herself, which makes it even worse. And let’s not go to the birth scene near the end… enough time to pop out two kids and a wise sentence about Anakin, and that’s it?!

Probably her shortcomings are in fact the script’s shortcomings which tries hard to fill in the blanks that remain until we see Darth Vader again a few years later. Anakin’s turn to the dark side is believable though a bit too stretched, which leads to certain holes in the overall structure. I had the feeling the movie was primarily cirMocling around itself until Anakin made his decision and had all the Jedi killed – that was when finally some character-driven action took place. Also nicely done was Anakin’s and Obi Wan’s last fight on Mustafa, and that also gave a rather disgusting, however convincing, explanation for Darth Vader’s outfit.

All in all: looks good, lacks some especially in the department of acting, but is certainly not a bad movie. 3 of 6 Meeps – average
