Say What You Need To Say
This story requires a bit of background information: there’s a statue in the harbor which depicts a prostitute holding both the pope and the emperor in her hands, signifying who was the greatest power during the church council here in the 15th century
. The statue called “Imperia” is 12m high and
very hard to overlook. However the sign which states what it depicts is 1) very small in comparison and 2) in German only.
A friend of mine and me were going for a walk and ended up in the harbor, in front of the Imperia. A Canadian couple of tourists walked up to us (easily recognizable because of the very subtle backbag with a huge Canadian flag on it *g*) and inquired about the statue. I was looking at my friend, he was looking at me – how to explain without sounding completely crazy there’s a giant prostitute overlooking our harbour
? We finally settled on “entertainer” after beating about the bush for a few minutes, but the female half of the couple understood us right away: “Oh, she was ‘entertaining’ them *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*!”
Anyway, in case you are wondering why indeed we do have this statue: there’s a local artist from around here whose humor can only be described as “malicious”. He was inspired by a story by HonorĂ© de Balzac about the above mentioned council and couldn’t help but make a statue of the most embarrassing part of it. Basically he makes fun of Konstanz and its almost ridiculous pride of its former glory and no one really notices. Original, to say the least
