Music
John Mayer’s third (or fourth, depending on what you count in) studio album “Continuum” manages to sound a lot like him and yet also very different.
Compared to his previous CDs, Mayer seems to have lost a lot of the innocence that marked especially “Room for Squares” and given in to his more melancholic, broody side. Not that this is a bad thing: the music is still well-crafted and beautifully played, the lyrics even more thoughtful and John’s voice the right tad of disenchanted to make them believable.
- Waiting On The World To Change – The song is okay however I find it not a very good choice for first single. Lyric-wise excellent as usual. MMM
- I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You) – Very honest and very gripping. Sticks with you. I love the bridge. MMMMM
- Belief – Impressive lyrics and catchy tune to boot. Please release this a single! MMMMMM
- Gravity – Sadly, a real disappointment. Dull and boring. M
- The Heart Of Life – Nice song and surprisingly positive lyrics. Very soothing. MMMM
- Vultures – Another winner. Up-beat music contrasts nicely with the dark lyrics. MMMM
- Stop This Train – Reminds me very much of “83″ melody-wise and speaks eloquently about the fear of growing old. MMMM
- Slow Dancing In A Burning Room – Very blues-heavy ballad. Easy to get lost in the beautiful melody. MMMM
- Bold As Love – I love the chorus, the verse is a bit tenacious. MMMM
- Dreaming With A Broken Heart – A real highlight! A heart-breaking song, fantastic music, sad lyrics. MMMMMM
- In Repair – A bit too long for my taste but still pretty decent. MMM
- I’m Gonna Find Another You – Perhaps the song that says “This is Blues, y’all” the most on the record. Short and sweet. MMM
All in all, a bona-fide Blues record, and definitely worth the wait. 4 out of 6 Meeps – good
