A quick round-up on the movies I have seen recently. SPOILERS!
Happy-Go-Lucky
Sally Hawkins as permanently, not to say obtrusively smiling and giggling Poppy whose mood does not change whatever disaster hits her. It’s never quite clear where this is headed, and it becomes very irritating after a while.

Kinky Boots
Well-done British dramedy about a traditional shoe factory that is almost out of business when the new owner has a chance encounter with a 6ft2 drag queen in dire need of boots… funny and at the same time a little bit melancholic, “Kinky Boots” gets points for great acting and Chiwetel Ejiofor singing “Whatever Lola wants” in drag. Irina Palm
Another well-done independent film from Britain, this time slightly less funny but with a sympathy for its characters that is rare. Never offensive despite the story of the elderly housewife who becomes a professional giver of hand-jobs in a sex club in order to raise money for her sick grandchild. Marianne Faithfull is spectacularly good!

The Clearing
Very depressing and bleak movie about a kidnapping gone wrong that affects the lives of all involved. There is an undercurrent of dread and dispair which makes it hard to watch even though Helen Mirren is exceptionally moving as the deceived wife of Robert Redford. Watch the trailer…

Beauty Shop
Typical black comedy that is only saved by Queen Latifah and the obvious joy of Kevin Bacon and Andie MacDowell to make complete fools out of themselves. Queen Latifah plays Gina who opens her own beauty salon and has to fight with racism in all its variations, power failures and stupid sisters-in-law. Heavily relying on the Ghetto stereotypes about black women, it is most enjoyable when these are not used for laughs.

I am not sure if I’ll watch “Happy-Go-Lucky” - not that tempted. Especially since all the people I know who have gone to see it were not that impressed.
I really do still want to see “Kinky Boots”.
“Irina Palm” was very good. The audience *loved* it when I saw it in the cinema.
“Beauty Shop” - why?
You can imagine how I feel about an ABBA musical with Meryl Streep.
