This story requires a bit of background information: there’s a statue in the harbor which depicts a prostitute holding both the pope and the emperor in her hands, signifying who was the greatest power during the church council here in the 15th century :P. The statue called “Imperia” is 12m high and
very hard to overlook. However the sign which states what it depicts is 1) very small in comparison and 2) in German only.
Hooray, today the cathedral’s tower has been opened for visitors
(after being closed due to restauration for the last 7+ years). Since admittance was free and it’s Saturday, you can imagine what masses of people pushed through the narrow stair case (really narrow: spiral staircase + 25 people coming down + 25 people going up = :dizzy:). However, the waiting and climbing was absolutely worth it because once on the roof, you have an absolutely spectacular view over the city, the Rhine, the Lake of Konstanz, the Reichenau and large parts of Switzerland. It’s really funny seeing the old town from above: I’ve discovered more than one roof garden ;), plus I also found my house :D! Have a look for yourself at my photolog.
I went for a walk yesterday because I had lots of other stuff nothing better to do ;). The water level is so low you can walk in places which are not accessible the rest of the year, and so I went down to the Rhine’s river bed again - this time on the Northern Shore however. It’s really amazing what people throw away / loose. I found countless bottles, glasses and cans, but also shoes resp. soles, gloves, slips, plates, CDs, an old ID and, most interesting of them all, a huge bag containing a half-liquefied photo album and a German translation of the Koran. There was also a key in there but nothing else, so I’m wondering whether it was thrown in deliberately or if it just fell in? I felt a bit like I was on CSI, he ;).
